A Mediterranean Dream: Cruising from Athens to Venice
Embarking on a Mediterranean cruise is nothing short of magical, especially when your journey begins in the ancient city of Athens, Greece, and ends in the romantic canals of Venice, Italy. With stops at idyllic Greek islands, the captivating coasts of Croatia, and the medieval charm of Kotor, Montenegro, this adventure promises to be a feast for the senses. Here’s a glimpse into what makes this itinerary unforgettable, along with tips for enhancing your trip with pre- and post-cruise stays and the benefits of working with a travel agent.
Pre-Cruise Stay: Soaking in the Wonders of Athens
Starting our journey in Athens offered the perfect blend of history, culture, and modern charm. We arrived two days early which allowed us to immerse ourselves in the city’s treasures, such as the iconic Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the vibrant Plaka neighborhood. Relax in a rooftop café overlooking the ancient ruins or explore the National Archaeological Museum to set the stage for your Mediterranean odyssey.
A pre-cruise stay not only provides you with time to explore but also helps you adjust to any time zone differences and ensures you won’t feel rushed on embarkation day. It’s your chance to start your trip at a relaxed pace—a gift when you’re about to embark on a packed itinerary. We stayed in the heart of the city, and were able to walk everywhere! We took some tours to visit the hot spots and that took care of all of our entrance fees and our local guide could give us insight that was truly amazing. Walking around and listening to live music, eating outside and truly embracing all Athens had to offer was magical. Our hotel was amazing and had a rooftop bar overlooking the Acropolis and a pool and really set the tone for our trip.
Highlights of the Cruise
-
The Greek Islands: The Greek islands are a dream come true for sun-seekers and history enthusiasts alike. Picture yourself wandering the whitewashed streets of Mykonos, marveling at the sunsets in Santorini, or exploring the ancient ruins of Rhodes. Each island has its own unique character, offering a mix of relaxation, adventure, and cultural discovery. We took advantage of a private yacht in Mykonos with amazing food, snorkeling and had something for everyone. My daughter was able to scuba dive at one of the islands and we were able to explore caves and really enter a different world.
-
Kotor, Montenegro: Nestled at the end of a fjord-like bay, Kotor is a hidden gem that feels like stepping back in time. The fortified old town, with its winding streets and medieval architecture, is a delight to explore. For the adventurous, hiking up to the San Giovanni Fortress rewards you with panoramic views of the bay. We marveled at the food while taking in some soccer and really taking in the history of it all.
-
Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast: Split, a city that perfectly blends ancient and modern, is a must-visit destination. Explore the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and stroll along the Riva promenade. Split offers a mix of vibrant culture, stunning coastal views, and historical charm that will leave you enchanted. We also took a tour to Kyrka falls and there is truly nothing more beautiful. What an experience
-
Venice, Italy: Your journey ends in Venice, where the romantic canals and historic architecture create a perfect finale. Take a gondola ride, stroll through St. Mark’s Square, and savor authentic Italian gelato as you reflect on your incredible journey. Our Hotel was right on the Lagoon and walking distance to Plaza San Marco and my one daughter ate her weight in Bolognese on a nightly basis. We drank espresso's and wine and explored and got lost in the moments - it was amazing for all of us.
Post-Cruise Stay: Embracing La Dolce Vita in Venice
Spending a night or two in Venice after your cruise lets you savor the city’s magic without the rush. Early mornings and evenings are especially enchanting, as the day-trippers have departed, leaving you to wander the quieter streets and bridges. A post-cruise stay also provides a buffer between the end of your trip and your journey home, allowing you to unwind and soak in the last moments of your Mediterranean escape. My
